Snorkeling and Skin Diving

Skin diving is snorkeling while making breath-hold dives to observe aquatic life, up close and personal. All you need is a mask, snorkel and fins. You can do it entering water from the shore or from a boat depending on where you are and the places of interest. You do not have to necessarily approach a Dive Center or a commercial set up to do this. You can do it on your own provided you understand the risks involved and how to cope with them. Typically two hours is enough to complete a skin diving certificate course but The Journey Beneath is conducting an extensive course spread over two sessions. First will be a classroom session which will involve watching a video, learning about the skin diving equipment, types of open water environments, effects of pressure at depths, interaction with aquatic life, buddy system, problem management and safe diving practices. You will also learn about the tides and tide tables, moon phases, currents, waves, factors affecting visibility; and the way they affect you. Second session will be in water; learning the essential water skills, snorkeling on surface, making vertical head first dive, swimming underwater and other such fun activities.

To take this course, you must preferably be a swimmer. Non swimmers can also try this course but the certification will be done only if the course standards are successfully met.

It is recommended you have your own Snorkel-Mask-Fins which are now easily available and you can carry them for holidays. Also it ensures a comfortable fit and eliminates the risk of contamination by others. However, if you do not want to buy your snorkel set right away, I can provide on rental.
